Carabello and Crawford remind us that the therapy for mitral stenosis has come full circle. Just as fascinating is the way in which medical attitudes toward mitral stenosis have changed. Elliott Cutler made the first brave attempt at surgical treatment for mitral stenosis in Boston in 1923, when he inserted a knife through the apex of the left ventricle and blindly cut the valve at right angles to its natural orifice.
