Summary:This minireview discusses the accelerative role of alkali metal alkoxides in two important catalytic processes: hydrogenation of ketones and esters with Noyori‐type molecular catalysts. Here I offer my perspective on the unique mechanistic aspects of these reactions – a subject that remains controversial and often misunderstood. Chemical modification of the catalyst via the formation of the amidate HM−N−Ma+ complexes and/or physical activation of the substrate through C=O…Ma+ non‐covalent interactions are two factors responsible for the rate acceleration in Noyori‐type hydrogenations.
