Summary:α-Ketobutyric acid is one of the reaction products formed from cystathionine or homoserine by cystathionase. α-Ketobutyric acid was reacted with pentafluorophenylhydrazine, and the hydrazone was extracted with ethyl ether, reacted with diazomethane, and subjected to gas-liquid chromatography with an electron capture detector. This method provides a specific and sensitive assay for cystathionase and cystathionine in biological samples.
