Flash Sintering of Anode-Electrolyte Multilayers for SOFC Applications

We show that multilayer green tapes constituted from sandwiched layers of NiO–zirconia anode and cubic zirconia electrolyte can be sintered below 1000°C in a few seconds under the influence of a DC electric field. The sintering yields a dense electrolyte layer with minor closed porosity, and an anod...

Summary:We show that multilayer green tapes constituted from sandwiched layers of NiO–zirconia anode and cubic zirconia electrolyte can be sintered below 1000°C in a few seconds under the influence of a DC electric field. The sintering yields a dense electrolyte layer with minor closed porosity, and an anode layer with open porosity, and, most importantly, a multilayer that is largely devoid of defects and delamination.
