Summary:This editorial discusses the value-based approach to cultural economics. While we preach to each other in the standard approach that we do positive economics and are therefore objective in our advice to policy makers, our influence is normative. Policy makers take over the values that they read in the standard practice. And that normative impact is huge. The value-based approach provides an alternative vocabulary and with that other values. For where the standard approach bypasses the cultural organizations, the value-based approach targets them even more directly than the policy makers. Last but not least, the value-based approach makes a difference for the way we understand ourselves and what we are doing here.
