[...]our prior hospital-based studies have documented severe deficiencies in the communication and decision-making process from the families' perspective [13-15]. [...]when clinicians partner with families, patients experience better health outcomes as well as the involved family members [23-27]. [...]we developed a decision-support intervention, called MyICUGuide (www.myicuguide.com), that addresses these deficiencies and provides patient- and family-centered information about the ICU environment in general, tips for coping with the stress of having a family member in the ICU, and principles of shared decision making in addition to eliciting information from the family members about themselves and the patient via exercises and values clarification tools.
