Summary: | The selenium (Se) status of 17 burn patients of the Burn Service of Hermann Hospital of Houston, TX was compared to 191 healthy individuals. Results showed significantly lower urine, plasma, and erythrocyte Se concentration and depressed erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in patients recovering from burns. This indicates that a high energy and protein intake in burn patients does not guarantee an adequate intake of Se to maintain normal blood Se and GSH-Px levels and normal urinary Se excretion. Recommendations are that enteral formula and total parenteral nutrition solutions used for burn patients should provide at least 200 ug Se/day |
