Summary: | General criteria that focus on physiologic parameters (e.g., blood pressure, respiration and oxygenation) are currently used to assess seniors readiness for discharge from surgery, but do not address nor assess potential patient-specific risk factors such as health literacy (HL), cognitive impairment, social support, patient comprehension, and other limitations and needs of seniors [6–8]. Seniors with poor HL are particularly vulnerable to gaps in the safety and quality of care in the ambulatory setting where the patient, not the provider, has a primary role in implementing self-care instructions, received during brief encounters with healthcare personnel. [...]anesthesiologists taking care of seniors with frailty may encounter system and individual barriers to implement the proposed recommendations. |
