Summary:The synthesis and the thermal properties of a series of poly(enaryloxynitrile)s with flexible alkylenic ether units distributed on a diphenol moiety are reported. It is shown that polymers having aliphatic units in the main chain do not usually show high thermal stability. However, polymers sustained a 90% residual weight at the temperature between 370-390 degree C and 75-80% of residual weight at 500 degree C. Within each series, greater thermal stability was observed in the case of polymers with shorter alkylenic chains. Enhanced thermal stability is associated with a dicyanovinyl group in the polymer chain. On the bases of these results, the chemical structures of polymers changed during heating to 390 degree C at most. However the decomposition of polymers seems to occur simultaneously during crosslinking of the dicyanovinyl group.
