Degradation of high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by Pseudomonas cepacia

Three strains of Pseudomonas cepacia degraded the PAHs benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, and coronene as sole carbon and energy sources. The inocula contained high cell densities. After 63 days of incubation, benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene concentrations decreased by 30% and coronene...

Summary:Three strains of Pseudomonas cepacia degraded the PAHs benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, and coronene as sole carbon and energy sources. The inocula contained high cell densities. After 63 days of incubation, benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene concentrations decreased by 30% and coronene concentration decreased by 65-70%. The three strains also were able to degrade all the PAHs at once in a PAH substrate mixture containing three-, four-, five-, and seven-benzene ring compounds. In addition, the five- and seven-benzene ring compounds showed improved degradation in the presence of low-molecular-weight PAHs.
