Summary:The incidence of lactose malabsorption in 68 normal Chinese children in Singapore was studied following ingestion of pure lactose or full-cream milk. Lactose malabsorption was detected in 26% of children given pure lactose and in 21% of those given full-cream milk. Incidence of lactase insufficiency is considered lower than earlier reports, suggesting that the lactase activity was being sustained by continuing ingestion of milk beyond infancy by Singapore children.(wz)
