Summary:Here, the established magnesium oxide modified pre-treated carbon paste electrode (MgO-MPCPE) was applied for the determination of environmental pollutants like catechol (CC), hydroquinone (HQ) and resorcinol (RS) at psychological pH 7.4. The MgO nanoparticle prepared by simple mechanochemical method. Surface morphology and particle size of MgO nanoparticle was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The MgO-MPCPE was depicts superior electrochemical response for individual and simultaneous detection of CC, HQ and RS than BCPE using cyclic (CV) and differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) techniques. Under optimization condition the limit of detection (LOD) calculated for CC in the range 10–90 μM, for HQ in the range 10–100 μM and for RS in the range 10–80 μM and LOD was found at 0.13, 0.11 and 0.25 μM respectively. The kinetic property of modified electrode was found be adsorption controlled phenomena. In addition, the MgO-MPCPE implies fine selectivity, stability and successfully approach for the investigation of CC, HQ and RS in practical sample with reliable recovery. [Display omitted] •Magnesium oxide nanoparticle was synthesized by simple mechanochemical method and characterized.•Good sensitivity, selectivity and exhibits electrochemical response.•Simultaneous resolution of catechol, hydroquinone and resorcinol was studied.•Analytical application of magnesium oxide modified pre-treated carbon paste electrode was studied.
