Summary:Using numerical methods and the effective index approach that we recently discussed in a separate publication, we show that it is possible to obtain highly efficient, phase matched nonlinear generation of infrared (3 μm) radiation in a one-dimensional photonic band gap structure. We predict conversion efficiencies that approach pump depletion in single-pass geometry, assuming χ (2) values of order 100 pm/V, and pump intensities of order 100 MW/cm 2.
