Summary:The exact transient energy response of a two-degree-of-freedom system subject to an impulse is compared to that from a transient statistical energy analysis on a two oscillator system. Mathematical expressions are derived for both methods and compared. The comparisons focus on the initial energy transfer ratio, the rise time to a peak value, the peak value and final decay rates. Numerical modelling of the two methods is also made. It is found that the integral of transmitted energy is identical for both approaches. The response reaches the peak level earlier according to the statistical energy analysis but peak levels and eventual decay rates and levels are similar for both methods.
