Summary: | The present work is the effort in improving the mechanical properties of the 42CrMo4 steel by using different oil quenchants and also performing tempering treatment at different temperatures. Hardness, impact resistance and microstructures for various trials are obtained. Statistical analysis is used to obtain the optimum combination of oil viscosity and tempering temperature to obtain the superior combination of hardness and impact properties. The Regression equation is developed which may be used to predict the hardness and impact toughness of this material which involves the parameters and range of values as considered in this study. The results have shown that the tempering temperature of 362 °C and the quenchant oil with a viscosity of 41 cSt would provide the optimum combination of hardness and impact energy for the steel under consideration. Analysis of Variance results have shown the major contributing factor on impact energy is oil viscosity, whereas tempering temperature has the major contribution on the variation of hardness for the range of values considered for the study. |
