Diagnosing acute HIV infection: The performance of quantitative HIV-1 RNA testing (viral load) in the 2014 laboratory testing algorithm

Highlights • In HIV diagnosis, discordant Combo and Multispot should be resolved by an RNA test. • We found that viral loads worked comparably to the standard assay in this setting. • The viral loads detected in acute HIV infection participants were very high.
