Hydrodynamic Influence on Sampling Systems in Bioreactors

An oscillating sampling system is tested for its ability to prevent biofouling on top of the filter membrane. The oscillating device is compared to a static one during a yeast cultivation process. Filtration rates are compared, and withdrawn samples are analysed via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM...

Summary:An oscillating sampling system is tested for its ability to prevent biofouling on top of the filter membrane. The oscillating device is compared to a static one during a yeast cultivation process. Filtration rates are compared, and withdrawn samples are analysed via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicate that the oscillating sampling device shows better sampling flow, due to lack of significant biofouling.
