Summary:[Display omitted] •PEDOT films obtained by AC-bipolar electropolymerization were analyzed.•PEDOT films in contact with metal electrodes showed anisotropic electrical behavior.•The anisotropic behavior was attributed to the gradient doping state across the film. Anisotropic electrical behavior of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films obtained by AC bipolar electropolymerization is reported. Contact behaviors of the PEDOT films with metal electrodes were found to be anisotropic and dependent on the metallic materials and their arrangement, where Schottky and Ohmic junctions were both observed on the same film. Based on the comprehensive control experiments and photoemission yield spectroscopy in air study, the anisotropic behavior of PEDOT films was attributed to the in-plane gradient doping across the film, which was given during the AC bipolar electropolymerization.
