Summary:Public doubt has emerged both about science & about the progress of the human race. This has brought about the emergence of antiscience attitudes, which should be opposed strongly. The involvement of scientists in public policy has helped to encourage this attitude through confusion of scientific & political/ideological concerns. Scientists can best serve society by adherence to the ethics of science, open admission of ignorance or uncertainty on certain questions, & clear advocacy of the value of science. W. H. Stoddard.
