Summary:Sandstone reservoir is one of the main types of oil and gas reservoirs in China. Many research papers have been published to discuss the relationship between the seismic reflection and the characteristics of the sandstone reservoir, such as the relationships between the P-wave velocity of the sandstone and the porosity, the clay content and the permeability. In this paper, the relationship between the characteristics of seismic reflectivity (the dynamic characteristics such as amplitude, frequency and absorption coefficient) and the oil/gas content is observed under different content of gas (CH 4 and CO 2), oil or water through seismic physical modeling of the sandstone reservoir. By combining experimental results of the seismic physical modeling and the Biot theory, we develop a method to detect the sandstone reservoir using the reflection amplitude attenuation characteristics directly. Some oil and gas reservoirs have been successfully discovered in the central western China using this method.
