Summary:In rotational imagery, it was investigated whether the subjects simply turned or used other strategies in matching tasks. Many studies suggest that the hand is a key factor in solving these tasks. In this study a mental rotation task and a manipulative task were conducted with 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children. The index of the mental rotation task was response time (RT), and the manipulative task used a plate corresponding to the sight of a stimulus on an LCD monitor. Results showed that six kinds of strategies were employed by mental rotators and non-mental rotators. The manipulative strategies used for the matching of a hand-turned object were interpreted as a visually guided action and important for identification of an object's contours and features.
