Summary:The capacity of the randomly spread synchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channel subject to frequency-flat fading is studied in the wide-band limit of large number of users. We find the spectral efficiency as a function of the number of users per chip, the distribution of the flat fading, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), for the optimum receiver as well as linear receivers (single-user matched filter, decorrelator, and minimum mean-square error (MMSE)). The potential improvements due to both decentralized transmitter power control and multi-antenna receivers are also analyzed.
