Summary: | Responds to the paper by Ordunez-Garcia et al. in 86 (5) May 1996, p.738-43 to correct historical and political biases. Argues that the title is deceptive because there was no blockade of Cuba in 1898 and there is no blockade now. Discusses the origins of the famine which caused the epidemic of amblyopia in 1898; reviews more recent problems and hold that responsibility for the current economic disaster lies primarily with the Cuban government. Ordunez-Garcia and colleagues reply. (Quotes from original text) |
