Summary:The authors evaluated a noncultural, direct immunofluorescence test for diagnosing C. trachomatis rectal infections. This test, which has previously been successfully used to diagnose urethral and cervical infection, detects C. trachomatis elementary bodies by direct immunofluorescent staining of rectal secretions with a fluorescein-conjugated, species-specific monoclonal antibody.
