Summary:Abstract The tentative interpretations about the action of erythropoietin in vitro, based on consideration of our present studies, are (1) that erythropoietin increases heme synthesis in bone marrow cultures as a whole, and probably in individual erythroblasts as well, and (2) that erythropoietin induces DNA synthesis by erythroblasts. On the basis of these limited data we cannot make a statement about the relation between these two effects.
