Summary:Results of a study of the phase formation in topaz-containing rocks and clay-topaz compositions are reported. The percentage of topaz in its mixtures with refractory clay is shown to be an important factor controlling the formation of crystalline phases. Thus, topaz raw materials taken in small amounts (0.5-1.0% corrected for pure topaz) can be recommended for use in technologies for the production of clay-based ceramics, in particular, porcelain or chamotte aluminosilicate refractories. Improvement in functional properties of ceramics is reached through the activation of mullitisation and sintering of the clay binder. 5 refs.
