Summary:Type 1 diabetes is associated with increased suicide risk. Data for older diabetic individuals are inconsistent. In longitudinal data from 1413 adults recruited to the Fremantle Diabetes Study from 1993–1996 and 5660 matched non‐diabetic residents, followed to end‐2012, the age and sex‐adjusted sub‐hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for suicide in diabetic versus non‐diabetic individuals was 1.16 (0.38–3.51). Older Australians with diabetes are not at increased suicide risk.
