Summary: | Present work pertains to investigation carried out on solid state surfacing of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V with AA2124SiCp metal matrix composite by friction surfacing. The coating was characterised by metallography and dry sliding wear. For the first time it was found that titanium alloy could be friction surfaced with metal matrix composites. The surface coating exhibited the wear properties to many-fold than that of the titanium substrate. Significant improvement in the wear resistance of titanium alloy may be attributed to the interdiffusion of elements and the formation of nanocrystalline layer of the alloy at the interface. |
