Summary: | The development, implementation, and evaluation of a nutrition education program for older Americans is described. The program utilized the "volunteer peer-educator" approach, in which older individuals provided nutrition education sessions for their peers, on a voluntary basis. Twenty-two elderly volunteers (20 female, 2 male; 21 white, 1 black; ages 61-79) attended two 2-day training workshops, and over a 5-month period conducted 95 nutrition education sessions, primarily in senior citizen centers. Evaluations of this approach, completed by 933 participants, indicated that the sessions were well organized and provided interesting and useful information. (wz) |
