Summary:High rate biomethanation from methanol was carried out on granular sludge in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Although granulation was not observed on methanol only medium, granulation occurred in mixed substrates of methanol and acetate medium, suggesting that the presence of Methanothrix spp. was essential for granulation. In mixed substrates of methanol (8.0 g/ l) and acetate (1.5 g/ l), a methanol consumption rate as high as 75 g·( l-reactor) −1·d −1 with a methane production rate of ca. 30 l·( l-reactor) −1·d −1 was achieved at 9.4 d −1 of space velocity under steady operation for more than one year.
