the scope of practice for nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives is defined by a program's competency standards and by state requirements for licensure. If we encounter a problem that is outside our expertise, we consult others or make a referral. In this way, a nurse practitioner or nurse-midwife always works in collaboration with a physician, so that the transition to acute care can be made quickly and easily.
