Summary:1. 1. The auditory averaged evoked response (AER) was measured at the vertex in normal children and adults during the transition from wakefulness to sleep and throughout the night. 2. 2. The amplitude of wave N 2 at sleep onset was compared to values obtained during subsequent non-REM sleep. 3. 3. The largest amplitude of wave N 2 of the auditory AER occurred within 10 min of sleep onset regardless of state of consciousness. 4. 4. The influence of sleep onset per se on wave N 2 amplitude was greater than the effect of stage of sleep. 1. 1. Les réponses auditives évoquées moyennes (AER) sont mesurées au vertex chez des enfants normaux et des adultes pendant la période de transition entre l'éveil et le sommeil et tout au long de la nuit. 2. 2. L'amplitude de l'onde N 2 au début du sommeil est comparée aux valeurs obtenues pendant le sommeil en dehors des périodes de mouvements oculaires rapides. 3. 3. La plus grande amplitude de l'onde N 2 de la AER auditive apparaît pendant les 10 min que dure le début du sommeil sans se référer à l'état de conscience. 4. 4. L'influence du début de sommeil per se sur l'amplitude de l'onde N 2 est plus grande que l'effet du stade de sommeil.
