Summary:Salivary glands provide an excellent model for the study of epithelial–mesenchymal interactions and branching morphogenesis. This review will discuss the anatomy of different types of glands, in a range of different organisms. Then, concentrating on the mouse submandibular gland, the stages of salivary gland development will be reviewed and the relative role of the mesenchyme and the epithelium will be discussed. Finally, the genes thought to play a role in development of the glands from initiation to differentiation will be reviewed.
