Summary: | Infection with Cryptococcus neoformans is a common complication in AIDS patients in sub-Saharan Africa. In Central African countries, 5-12% of asymptomatic HIV-patients are seropositive for antigens of C. neoformans, and about 30% of AIDS patients with meningitis. Data from East African countries, where the HIV virus was introduced with a lag of some years, are not yet available. We report here on a prospective study in which the prevalence of cryptococcal antigens was determined in AIDS patients presenting with meningeal signs over a 1-year period at a regional referral hospital in northwest Ethiopia. Also, the seropositivity rate was ascertained in all patients with a clinical diagnosis of AIDS being admitted over a 3-month period. |
