Summary:A technique based on liquid scintillator with wavelength-shifting fibre readout is interesting for large-mass neutrino detectors. In this paper, we present the first results obtained with a laboratory prototype assembled at CERN. In the configuration tested, a large light yield has been observed and attenuation lengths of the order of 3.2 m have been measured. As a comparison, we also measured the attenuation length of the fibres in air using the same setup. No significant difference in attenuation length between the fibres in air and in liquid was measured.
