Summary:This publication offers school counselors and school staff a 5-phase planning model for implementing national standards for school counseling programs. The process involves the examination of current school counseling programs; identification of student needs; and selection of activities, strategies, and services to ensure that students achieve the competencies of the National Standards as they progress from kindergarten through high school. Chapter 1 discusses the National Standards for School Counseling Programs; Chapter 2 explains ways they can be implemented to ensure student success. The steps involved in bringing change and aligning a school program with the national standards are explained in Chapter 3. Creating a vision statement is described in Chapter 4, and determining how the vision statement will reflect what students should achieve is explained in Chapter 5. Program design, implementation, and evaluation are covered in Chapters 6-8. The conclusion summarizes the guidelines. (Contains 8 appendixes and 92 references.) (JDM)
