Summary:Gideon Koren, (Motherisk Program, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada) suggests that normal NVP shouldn't be left untreated, especially since many women have a career to follow. "NVP has a tremendous impact on the quality of life of women", says Koren, "and with evidence-based medicine showing that available treatments are safe, women don't need to tolerate its symptoms". Besides which, adds Koren, the consequences of not treating normal NVP is a progression to more severe symptoms. Apparently, hospitalisation rates due to severe NVP doubled after Bendectin (doxylamine-pyridone), the most common NVP therapy, was removed from the US market in 1983, after the financial cost of numerous litigation battles, which alleged that the drug caused birth defects, proved too high.
