Summary:Two experiments tested for effects of intralist cues upon recognition probability. A forced-choice technique was used instead of the yes-no method of previous studies, to avoid confounding with a possible response bias. Categorized and random lists were each tested on two trials, with targets appearing in the presence of zero, one or three intralist cues. Both experiments showed substantial effects of trials and list type, but no effect of intralist context. It was concluded that the findings did not support a direct connections assumption of item storage, but were consistent with the Rundus (1973) model where items are connected only to superordinate control elements.
