Summary:Microalgae are primary producers in the ocean where millions of species are distributed. This extensive bio...logical resource produce 20 billion tons of organic matter annually. Thus, related studies have a long historical background. Early microalgae work was limited to basic studies on the natural science related to the ecosystem. In 1995, the Korea Marine Microalgae Culture Center (KMMCC) was established with financial support from the National Research Foundation of Korea in the Department of Marine Bio-materials and Aquaculture, Pukyung National University (at the Institute of Fisheries Sciences located at Dongbacksum in Busan). The microalgae strain collection has been increasing continuously since 1995 and reached about 1,200 strains in 2004. The initial direction of the KMMCC focused on finding microalgae species that had a good dietary value for aquacultured larvae. KMMCC cultures are available to any individual or academic or commercial organizations in Korea. Orders for cultures are accepted by e-mail, fax, through the Web site, or in person.
