Electrochemical Natural Gas Conversion to More Valuable Species

Solid oxide fuel cell consisting of sintered YSZ (8% Y sub 2 O sub 3 ) is evaluated for conversion of methane into ethylene and acetylene. Summary:Solid oxide fuel cell consisting of sintered YSZ (8% Y sub 2 O sub 3 ) is evaluated for conversion of methane into ethylene and acetylene. A perovskite ceramic (La sub 0 sub . sub 9 Sr sub 0 sub . sub 1 MnO sub 3 ) cathode and various perovskite anode electrocatalysts are studied for operation at 850- 900 degrees C. Highest Faradic current density for conversion is obtained with Th sub 0 sub . sub 8 Yb sub 0 sub . sub 2 NiO sub 3 , which correlates to high O binding energies in the perovskite lattice. 119 refs.
