Summary:With the increasing installed capacity of wind power, higher requirements are put forward for the quality of wind power, but the randomness and intermittency of wind power seriously affect its quality and the stability of the power grid. Hydraulic wind power technology replaces the original gearbox with flexible transmission, which can effectively absorb wind speed pulsation and impact, smooth power transmission, reduce grid impact, as well as have the advantages of reducing cabin weight and construction cost to meet the needs of large-scale wind power development. However, how to further improve the overall efficiency of hydraulic wind turbine and wind power quality needs further research and exploration. This paper comprehensively summarizes the configuration, hydraulic transmission system, pitch control, hydraulic energy storage, etc., as well as analyzes the development of hydraulic wind turbine. •The development of green energy affects the development of the world. This paper analyzes the application of hydraulic wind power generation technology, clarifies its advantages compared with traditional wind power technology, and puts forward the development direction of hydraulic wind power generation technology.•Compared with the traditional wind power system, the hydraulic wind turbine has some advantages. First, the bulky gear box can be omitted, and the hydraulic motor and synchronous generator can be flexibly arranged on the ground, thus reducing the weight and volume of the engine room, and improving the safety of the tower. Second, by using synchronous generators, rectifiers and frequency converters for power post-processing can be removed. What's more, synchronous generators can be directly connected to the grid. Third, hydraulic flexible transmission instead of rigid gear transmission can adjust the transmission ratio in real time. Combined with the application of accumulator, the wind speed fluctuation can be further filtered, the generator speed can be stabilized, and the power quality can be improved. Fourth, the utilization rate of low wind speed can also be improved by using fan linkage and digital control. Fifth, hydraulic variable propeller system has the advantages of small volume, good dynamic response, large torque and so on, which has been widely used in high-power wind turbines. Sixth, the installation cost can be lowered, showing its price advantage.•Hydraulic wind turbine can provide better power quality and has a good application prospect. At present, a lot of research on hydraulic wind power technology has been carried out, and even applied in real-life situations, but the main focus is on offshore wind power, and the application of land wind power is relatively less.•In order to further promote the application of hydraulic wind turbine, the research and development of high power hydraulic components is particularly important, especially the development of megawatt-level, low-speed, and high-torque hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor. In the application of offshore wind power, it is necessary to further consider the corrosion and leakage of hydraulic components.•At present, many researches on hydraulic wind power systems are carried out in the laboratory, and most of the power is small. However, megawatt systems will show different energy transmission characteristics and response characteristics, and so further research and practical tests are needed.•Hydraulic energy storage technology has shown its advantages in absorbing wind energy fluctuations and smoothing power, and further developing the joint control of hydraulic energy storage and hydraulic variable paddle has an important role in improving power quality and ensuring the safe operation of power grid.•Hydraulic wind power system with multi-fan and multi-generator combined operation, and the application of digital hydraulic technology can help to improve the utilization rate of wind energy and increase the power generation, which is a worthy research direction.
