Metastable-state lifetime of erbium ions measured through delayed absorption in the fiber propagation direction

Summary:We performed lifetime measurements of erbium ions doped in fibers with lengths of 20–160 cm. Using a pump–probe technique, we measured the lifetime of the 4 I 13/2 state of erbium ions in the fiber propagation direction. The dependence of the measured lifetime on fiber length was compared with the lifetime determined by temporally resolving spontaneous emission in the same direction. The dependence of the 4 I 13/2 lifetime on input power was also measured. We found that the 4 I 13/2 lifetime of erbium ions was nearly constant at about 10 ms under all the investigated conditions.
