Summary:One of the causes of the low efficiency of use of visible light (ηvisible) of the PDP is blockage of the light by the bus electrodes. Although the bus electrode is necessary electrically, it is not optically. In this paper, first, the effect of blockage by the bus electrode with a conventional electrode structure is studied. It is shown that 27% of the light is lost due to the bus electrode in the conventional structure even with an optimum design. Next, with a view to improving ηvisible, we propose the “transparent electrode–bus electrode separated (TB‐separated) PDP,” in which the transparent electrode and the bus electrode are structurally separated so that no discharge occurs on the bus electrode. Measurements show that the light emitting efficiency is increased by 22% compared with the conventional structure. As an application example, a new gray scale method with a multilevel cell is proposed. A reduction of the discharge sustaining time is shown. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
