Salton states that the problems we address have been known to him for nearly 30 years and these problems are avoided in the SMART project activities by not including user preferences in their model. In addition, because vector processing systems perform well, he concludes that the vector space model that excludes relevance is more realistic and should be preferred over a model that does.
