Summary:This volume concerns information collected as part of one of the most ambitious environmental research programmes ever undertaken in the UK, the Land Ocean Interaction Study (LOIS; Wilkinson et al., 1997). The LOIS programme has taken on the daunting task of quantifying the exchange, transformation and storage of materials at the land-ocean boundary of the North Sea and to determine how these parameters vary in space and time. Within both a British and mainland-continental Europe context, studies on the North Sea area are of particular importance as this region is the major sink for waste materials, receiving sewage and industrial wastes from the urban and industrial heartlands of both regions.
