Summary:A new AMS system based on a 5 MV tandem accelerator has been installed at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). This system, NIES-TERRA (Tandem accelerator for Environmental Research and Radiocarbon Analysis), is used primarily to investigate the environmental carbon cycle by means of high precision 14C dating. Our research program is also directed towards the use of 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, and 129I, both as tracers and chronometers. The details of the system design are presented here. The whole AMS system is presently undergoing performance tests.
