Summary:A synthetic pathway leading to saturated and mono-unsaturated 2-alkylcyclobutanones has been developed and proved to be very efficient and fast to realize. It was used to produce gram amounts of different 2-alkylcyclobutanones with saturated and mono-unsaturated alkyl side chain (2-decyl-, 2-dodecyl-, 2-dodecenyl-, 2-tetradecyl- and 2-tetradecenyl-cyclobutanone), necessary for in vitro and in vivo biological studies. The excellent chromatographic characteristics (purity better than 97%) of the synthesized compounds made it also possible to use them as chromatographic reference samples for the analysis of irradiated foodstuffs.
