Summary:Surface phonon propagation in anisotropic thin film structures displays beautiful and complex wavefronts. Using an interferometric optical pump and probe technique, we have imaged the propagation of surface phonons at frequencies up to 1 GHz in real time, allowing ‘movies’ of their wavefronts to be made with picosecond temporal and micron spatial resolutions. We image the propagation on various isotropic and anisotropic thin film structures, and give examples of how the dispersion relation can be directly derived from such movies.
