Deer wintering habitat and wetland protection in Maine: Spatial intersection of mapped resources

Areas of mapped deer wintering area (D), wetland (W), and wetland-deer wintering area intersects (W ∩ D) were measured from habitat and wetland maps prepared for five Maine municipalities to determine the extent of intersection between protected resources. Summary:Areas of mapped deer wintering area (D), wetland (W), and wetland-deer wintering area intersects (W ∩ D) were measured from habitat and wetland maps prepared for five Maine municipalities to determine the extent of intersection between protected resources. These intersects ranged from 3·9–9·8% of the total mapped wetland and deer wintering area polygon areas for each of the municipalities and was not a significant portion of the total habitat area. The frequency of deer wintering area and wetland that were separate discrete polygons was equal to those that were W ∩ D. Protection of deer wintering areas may result in protection of other types of wetlands not included in present mapping efforts.
