Summary:A decision support system (DSS) developed for a cider manufacturer, HP Bulmer PLC (UK), is described. Designed to facilitate consensus planning for production, distribution, and finance systems, the DSS incorporates a wide database and a bank of planning models. Coordinated planning of production, distribution, and finance at HP Bulmer has been difficult because of the seasonality of raw materials and products, constraints on inventory, and variable rates of production. The microcomputer-based DSS eases decision making by providing interactive color graphics data output reflecting system interactions. The model bank includes an evaluation model to assess the consequences of existing plans and any modifications to them, heuristic models to smooth existing plans subject to constraints, and optimizing models to generate plans according to user-defined weights or penalties for performance measures. In addition to routine planning, the DSS has been used successfully to evaluate capital investment proposals.
